“Do you have the gold?” said the first man. He represented the French far-right. A loathsome individual to be sure, but none of the occupants in the room were exactly in the running for the Nobel Peace Prize.

“Of course I have it” said Kappel. Did they really think he would come all this way to the meeting if he didn’t have it?

“Of course we will need to see some proof” said the Austrian representative, “I assume you brought it with you?”

Kappel barked out a laugh. “You lot must be completely brainless. No, I didn’t haul a huge haul of Nazi gold bars with me. But I did bring some nice clear photos of it, along with some photocopies of Reichsbank documents proving authenticity”.

As the pictures were passed around, any remaining doubt the others had about Kappel’s ability to deliver disappeared entirely.

“How did you know where to find this?” asked one.

“As the saying goes” said Kappel, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. I have a knowledgeable contact.”

“Who is?”

Kappel replied with a derisive snort. “Forget it.”

After a moment, Kappel added “I did find something else.”

Realising he had everyone’s attention, he handed out another photo which he had taken earlier that day. Everyone in the room didn’t look so impressed - until they looked at the copies of the authentication documents. When they realised what the item was, they were so shocked, they could barely speak.

“Where did you get this?” said the Greek representative, after managing to find his voice.

“In the vault alongside the gold I originally went for.”

“It’s a fake!” shouted the Greek.

“Really?” said Kappel, “the German government respectfully disagrees with you.”

As the pictures and documents were distributed, the sense of shock in the room was palpable. No longer were they thinking about the gold. That was now a secondary concern.

“Why would they keep it?” loudly demanded the Italian representative.

“I have no idea” said Kappel, calmly. “Why don’t you phone up the Chancellor and ask her?”

The Russian representative looked at Kappel questioningly.

“And having possession of this object...what do you think it entitles you to?”

“I’m sure you’ll agree - eventually anyway when your egos become unstuck - that possession of this object bestows upon the owner the right to rule. It is a holy relic for the National Socialists, and if we ever needed something to rally around, this is it” said Kappel, sitting back. “So what am I entitled to? I am entitled to all far-right parties in Europe coming under my personal leadership. We originally set out for the gold to replenish our coffers and beef up the armoury for the coming struggle. But this? This is much better than guns. This represents a weapon much more powerful and potent”.

The British representative looked at Kappel for a long moment.

“You sure have some balls walking into this room and making a demand like this” he growled. “And this” - waving the picture of the item - “proves nothing. For all we know, it could be a fake, whatever those documents of yours say”.
